Rooms in a Country Estate

In this country house, Kirill Istomin decorated a number of private spaces: a boudoir, the primary bedroom with its seating area, and bathrooms in a traditional English style. The client requested that the color scheme of the bedroom be inspired by macarons from Ladurée in Paris. The result? A unique space that is quiet, comfortable and, despite British influences, somewhat French.    

The mantel is decorated with hand-painted vintage Delft ceramic tiles. 

The floral fabric used for the bed’s canopy, headboard and skirt was chosen for its tones, which echo those of Ladurée’s famous macarons. The contrasting pale-blue check behind the headboard and on the toss pillows prevents the room from being too serious. The painted-wood floor, ceiling and furniture create a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere, while the plants and antique botanical prints on the walls conjure up the spirit of a blooming garden.

The double wardrobe, topped with Chinese export vases, is inspired by an 18th-century Chippendale design. The canopy bed, with its floral and checkered fabrics, is a homage to the rustic romanticism of late English decorator John Fowler. The quilted bedspread, with its oversized scalloped edging, adds old-world charm to the interior. Its pale peach color evokes macarons, as does the yellow of the tapestry that covers the bench. A pair of antique white porcelain table lamps was fitted with lampshades in gathered silk.

Kirill Istomin: “This kitchen is one of my favorites! Its colors are drawn from 17th-century Flemish paintings. I wanted to jazz up this traditional space by adding a bold, graphic touch. I suggested creating an overscaled zigzag pattern on the floor using striking yellow marble, which visually expands the boundaries of the narrow room.”
