Modern Apartment

Istomin was asked to update the existing interior and to fully renovate the newly purchased apartment upstairs. Both apartments to be combined into one spacious duplex. However, some existing furniture had to stay. Istomin infused fresh life into it by using new upholstery fabrics and decorative finishes. 

The walls in the stairwell are lined with custom puzzle-shaped marquetry panels. The gilded metal and rock crystal chandelier and shades of brown visually connect the space with the adjoining study. 

Istomin transformed a long, narrow space that was previously two smaller rooms into a luxurious study that also functions as a TV room. He adapted the tight space by installing a pair of club chairs that swivel on either side of the sofa. The horizontal stripes of the sofa upholstery visually extend the width of the room, while the built-in bookcases conceal a bar with a small sink and mini fridge. Large floor-to-ceiling double folding doors and glass backs in the bookcases bring daylight onto the landing, making it the focal point of the entire floor.

A gray cornice inlaid with mother-of-pearl and closet doors clad with sheets of Chinese tea paper create a shimmery effect in the primary bedroom hallway. The 1970s pyrite-framed mirror was purchased in Paris. 

The primary bedroom was previously located on the lower floor. Now conveniently moved to the upper level, it forms part of a large suite. The existing bed with tufted headboard and footboard was reupholstered in a light cream quilted linen. The walls and curtains in a custom, 1920s archival silk create an enveloping effect. The custom crystal chandelier and sconces from Lobmeyr are based on a 1970s design.

Istomin chose a custom ombre curtain to visually expand the ceiling in the living room. The large, oval ottoman that serves as a coffee table is covered in leather. 

The sunburst medallions on the bespoke straw marquetry commode echo the form of a large round vintage mirror in the living room. The wall is covered with geometric panels upholstered in metallic leather and Lurex woven fabric.
