Penthouse

At first glance, the interior of this penthouse seems unusually minimalistic for Istomin. But if you look closely, behind the apparent restraint, whimsical details are hidden: a combination of “incompatible” ornaments, vibrant contemporary art, unusual materials and textures. 

The feeling of lightness in the hallway is created by mirrored panels and the cascading glass chandelier and sconces. The reflective surface of the lacquered doors and wall, which conceals the foyer closet, adds airiness to the space.

The stone staircase seems to float in the air (Istomin designed the structure so that it doesn’t touch the wall), while the vintage mercury-glass center table visually softens the space.

The owners of this penthouse are passionate about contemporary art, which is evident not only in the choice of paintings, but also in the interior design. Table lamps with graphic bases, ottomans in the form of cat figurines and a marble fireplace with rock-crystal columns look like art pieces in their own right. Istomin created the puzzle-like mirrored wall behind the mantel to create a visual focus for the living room. The painting behind the sofa is by Damien Hearst. 

A monochrome eat-in kitchen combines comfort with a minimalistic approach. Stainless-steel details in the form of the kitchen cabinet drawers, pendant lights, and trim on the bar stools and table top, add a modern vibe.

The main highlight of the dining area is the chairs, upholstered in fabric “from head to toe.” Istomin installed the new oval window to provide extra light. 

The custom lantern designed by Istomin was inspired by an Adolf Loos design from 1910. The ceramic plate on the wall is by Pablo Picasso and the “Puppy” vase by Jeff Koons. The wall panels are clad with celadon-colored shagreen leather, while the graphic motifs of the curtains and bespoke rug add to the geometric spirit of the space.

 The decor of wife’s dressing room is inspired by haute couture. A balloon shade is trimmed with a wide pleated border, reminiscent of jabot collars, while the upholstery of the chair cascades to the floor like a fluffy skirt. The blush-colored vanity table with mirrored drawers and the puffy tassel fringe on the curtains both channel Hollywood glamour of the Thirties.

The headboard in the youngest daughter’s bedroom has an ornate “Venetian” mirror frame. Istomin’s favorite technique is to edge curtains with fabric scallops. Here, he used the same fabric as on Roman shades. The colored Venetian glass chandelier and pink ceramic desk lamp are vintage. 

This bedroom is inspired by the magical world of Alice in Wonderland. Istomin chose a fanciful overscaled wallpaper with birds and butterflies. The whimsical custom armchair is reminiscent of 1940s designs.
